About Blog Backlinks
You have heard the term "Blogging" before, well blog backlinks are just that...Blogging. The use of blogging in link building campaigns was instrumental in creating an online footprint of your site or domain. The premise of backlinking with blogs was very much an accepted way of not only generating traffic to your website but also building popularity with the search engines. Instead of listing your name you would list the keyword you were trying to rank for, and by listing a website in the appropriate field, this would allow anyone seeing your keyword (or Anchor text) and clicking it to reach your website. What the search engines saw was anchor text with a link to your site; and obviously the more of these the search engines saw the better your ranking with those search engines.
About Profile Backlinks
Now profile backlinks can be on blog type sites also, but primarily they are on web forums. You know when you sign up for a website and they send you a confirmation email you have to click a link to confirm your registrations; then you logged into your profile page? Well in that profile these forums or special blog sites allowed you to list a website, some even allowed you to show anchor text. The problem people used to find with this kind of backlink was, the actual page your profile resided on was normally a Page Rank 0 (unless you actually did some backlinking to the profile), and the domain the forums were on normally carried a high page rank due to many contributing factors. Some forums or special blogs allowed you to take this a step further by placing a link (with your anchor text) in your signature; so that every time you posted on the forums your link would show and you would get a backlink. Due to a few bad apples, a lot of forums have done away with this because of spammers and exploiters.
SERP
Since Google's Panda update, our engineers have found that SERP seems to be coming of age in determining website rankings. Wikipedia has a brief but understandable explanation of SERPs. Note the "results normally include a list of web pages with titles, a link to the page, and a short description showing where the Keywords have matched content within the page" in the definition of what a SERP is. "Keywords have matched content within the page" is the key here. You see, in the past webmasters, link building services, and SEO companies were able to circumvent the use of keywords matching content on the page by using Meta tags on the page. By listing the keywords in the Meta tags the old SEO players used to be able to stop the search engines right there. The search engines would see the Meta tags, gather the information, and move on. Now they are comparing the keywords with the content on the page, the technology is advancing.
